What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease or periodontal disease occurs when your gums become infected with bacteria. Over time, this can result in the loss of gum tissue, damage to your teeth and jaw bone, and even have a negative impact on your overall health. Gum disease is extremely common — most people will develop gum disease at some point during their lives. It can be caused by poor oral health, genetics, or a combination of other factors. 

What Are The Symptoms Of Gum Disease?

Gum disease often displays few symptoms during the earliest stages. However, as the disease develops, you will likely notice symptoms like bleeding while you brush or floss, loose teeth, inflamed or receding gums, and discomfort. Late-stage gum disease leads to severe symptoms that can include significant loss of gum tissue, tooth decay, damage to your jaw, and consequential effects on your overall physical well-being.

What Is Scaling & Root Planing?

We typically treat gum disease using a procedure called scaling and root planing. During this procedure, which is also known as a deep cleaning, we use a tool called a dental scaler to gently clean out pockets of infected gum tissue and remove the tartar that has built up over time on the roots of your teeth. We suggest getting a scaling and root planing procedure every six months (some patients may need more frequent appointments) to keep gum disease at bay. If caught early, regular sessions can even reverse the disease completely!
